Alexei entered the room with a small zipped black kit in his hand. He sighed when he saw the scene. Dmitri was naked on the bed, barely awake, still with the knife in his hand. Virginie was at his side, also naked, in a pool of blood. Her head was on a corner of the room, ten feet away.

‘That’s unfortunate,’ said Alexei. Dmitri didn’t move. ‘Are you awake?’

Dmitri barely opened his eyes. ‘What?’

‘I said that’s unfortunate.’

Dmitri looked at him. ‘What do you mean?’

‘You really had to kill her?’

‘What do you fucking want, Alexei?’

Alexei showed him the kit.

‘What’s that?’ Asked Dmitri.

‘It’s a satellite phone. I found it among Virginie’s things. Apparently, she’s been in contact with people in the west for some time. I’m not sure what she’s been saying. I bet that’s why that Special Forces team came here.’

‘Who’s Virginie?’ asked Dmitri.

Alexei sighed again.

‘What did you take? Are you high? Do you need water or something?’

Dmitri opened his eyes one more time and tried to straighten himself a little.

‘I’m okay. What is it, dammit? What the fuck do you want?’

‘Virginie is the girl whose remains you’ve been fucking all morning. Why did you have to kill her? We could have learned a lot from her.’

Dmitri left his knife on the night table and sat on the bed, slowly regaining his senses and remembering what had happened. ‘I need a bath. Get me a bath.’

‘Do you want a glass of water?’

‘I want a bath.’

Alexei nodded. ‘I’ll get you a bath.’ He prepared to leave.

‘Have you ever come inside a dying woman?’ said Dmitri.

‘What?’ Alexei turned to him once more.

‘We did learn a lot from her.’

Alexei raised his eyebrow. ‘Like what?’

‘I killed her because she begged me to kill her.’

‘Okay...’

‘And she offered me a secret in return. Maria’s secret.’

Now Alexei was interested. ‘Maria’s secret?’

‘Yes.’

Dmitri picked up his towel from the floor and dried the sweat and blood from his face, chest and legs. ‘Yes. Bring me some water. I’m thirsty.’

But now Alexei was growing impatient. ‘What’s Maria’s secret?’

Dmitri looked up. ‘What?’

Alexei clinched his teeth. ‘Maria’s secret. For fuck’s...’ He calmed down. ‘Would you mind telling me Maria’s secret? The one Virginie told you as you were cutting her head off while you were fucking her?’

Dmitri smiled. ‘It’s about the girl. It’s about Laura.’

‘What about Laura?’

Dmitri looked at Alexei and smiled even more. ‘She also has the gift.’

Alexei was truly surprised. ‘You mean...’

Dmitri got up and looked at him, his naked body showing the muscle he had worked on for years. ‘Yes, my friend. Exactly. There’s two of them.’

Alexei’s eyes shined. An unusual swell of relief and joy filled his chest. ‘We can send one to Nikolai Fedorovich! We can send one to the General and keep our allegiance!’

And Dmitri nodded, satisfied. This was the break they had been waiting for. The future was at reach. ‘Exactly. We’ll send Maria. But first we need them back. Did you hear from Bartosz?’
